Christmas 2009

Our Christmas production this year was ‘Alice in Wonderland’. All the children took part and performed to two full audiences on Thursday afternoon and Friday evening.

Ancient Greece - Autumn 09
This term our whole school topic has been based on “Ancient Greece”.
All children took part in a “Greek Afternoon” when they were able to dress up in costume, taste food, play knucklebones, build temples and write their name using the Greek alphabet. KS2 pupils have been writing their own Myths, investigating Greek Gods and designing and making Greek theatre masks.
KS1 pupils have made shields using maths patterns and told the story of The Trojan Horse on Greek vases.
We held a Greek Evening in school when parents were able to help their child/children create a mosaic tile whilst enjoying a few “Greek” snacks.
Grand Opening - October 2009
Over the summer holidays we had quite a lot of work done at St. Hedda’s. We had a new surface laid to the front playground, the infant toilets were refurbished, new carpets were fitted throughout the school, the school gates painted, a new ICT suite in the library and the parish rooms developed. We are very pleased with all these alterations/additions and we celebrated this with a Grand Opening performed by Lady Normanby on Wednesday 7th October.

Sports Day - June 2009
Once again the weather was kind to us for our annual Sports Day on Tuesday 23rd June. There was an excellent crowd of support from both families and friends.
This year we were in our “house” teams; Barn Owls, Lapwings, Kestrels and Kingfishers. We also introduced some new team relay races which included flat race, bean bag and water team relays these were contested very competitively.
The scores remained close throughout the afternoon, culminating in a vital last race to see who would become this year’s champions.
Tri - Golf Festival - June 2009
Following on from the Tri-golf coaching lessons in school, some children took part in the Tri-Golf Festival at Whitby Golf Club. Children had to work round various skill stations, winning points along the way. We were delighted to finish in 2nd place.
It was an enjoyable morning despite being bitterly cold!
Children have enjoyed their second session of cricket coaching by local junior cricket development officer Leigh Coates.
Children have also been introduced to a new sport this term, Basketball. Children were taught the basic skills of the game throughout 4 sessions delivered by Basketball community development officer, Martin Roberts.
This term we also celebrated National Sports Week by trying various sporting activities, designing adverts for a sporting event and the KS2 class designed a golf course for the infants to try their skills at.
Year 5 children joined with other year 5 children from the valley schools to take part in a morning of “Orienteering”. This was a very enjoyable morning in which the children were given various tasks which included using navigational skills to work their way around a course.
R.E. - June 2009
This term our topics were Good News, Choices and Neighbours.
On Wednesday 3rd June we celebrated “Pentecost” with a special day in school. We came to school wearing red and yellow clothes, the colours that symbolise Pentecost. We started the day with an assembly given by Mr Hay, Diocesan RE Co-ordinator, who joined us for the day. Throughout the day we did lots of activities which included making buns, wind socks and prayer doves. We also had a picnic at lunch time.

PEAT RIGG Residential trip - May 2009

The year 5s and 6s took part in a residential trip to Peat Rigg. We spent a week taking part in lots of different activities. When we arrived, we walked in to find just bare rooms with fresh sheets from the laundry. So before we did anything else we had to make our beds. For some of us, this was the first time and proved to be a tricky task! We really liked the dormitories as they were cosy. Throughout the week we were very well fed. The food was very tasty and we could eat as much as we liked as we had to keep our energy levels high! We made some new friends from Castleton and Egton School and of course Stan the dog who was loved by everyone!

As well as activities during the day, we took part in activities like orienteering, blindfolded obstacle courses and forest treks in the evening. After these, we were all feeling tired and ready for a quick shower and hot chocolate before we headed for bed. We were all very brave and lots of us faced our fears whilst tree climbing, canoeing and abseiling. This was one of our scariest moments as we were sitting on the edge of a 50m high viaduct. One of our favourite activities was canoeing. We paddled from Ruswarp to Whitby and the best part was going down the weir.

We also enjoyed doing a night line. We were blindfolded and had to find our way around an obstacle course using just a rope. On the last night, the sun came out and we enjoyed a BBQ and talent show. The evening featured a variety of entertainment including magic and mind reading and of course singing and dancing from our own Meg and Rhian!
We loved Peat Rigg, we made lots of friends and the saddest part of the week was when we had to leave.
